Going with our flow this Christmas

Until a couple of years ago, my Christmas mantra was ‘go with the flow’… but it was actually a raging torrent that swept me along and left me gasping on the banks!

Through a big life change a few years ago, I’ve learned to appreciate Christmas more as simply a holiday to be enjoyed.

When I was married, it felt like there were 50 family events with Christmas Eve gatherings until midnight, followed by a string of events on the day itself, then Boxing Day…

At each one, I felt pressured to eat and drink and that I must sustain a properly perky attitude no matter what. Beyond exhausting!

I thought I was going with the flow as the right thing to do to be nice and avoid conflict, chaos or offence. But the flow was determined by others as I ignored my own needs and wants.

A few years after the separation, last week that chapter closed completely, and it feels so free. This week, I am feeling excited about Christmas eve with my beloved partner Tom (well, as soon as I return from the Esencias stall at Fremantle Farmers’ Market). We’ll probably sit outside with a cheeseboard and marvel at how the grapevines have grown.

Christmas morning we’ll visit my parents’ house to do presents, and go to my aunty’s for lunch. Nowadays I just try to be authentic, appreciating the many good things and connections. I gently segue from any conversations or situations that aren’t for me, and it feels like a nice flow I can keep up with.

As Tom and I did last year, we’ll leave earlyish and spend the evening at the beach. I love the vibe, there’s a camaraderie with others grounding down and chilling on this special day.

What changed?

When my past relationship ended, life completely changed. I realised how much of myself I was giving away to please others.

I learned a lot in the marriage about honouring myself and what makes me happy, inspired and peaceful.

From that space I found the passion to follow my dreams, including creating Esencias. It truly is born of a desire to help people connect to the essence of self.

It’s the longest day of light today with the summer solstice, and it seems perfect to mark the occasion by lighting a candle in honour of our inner light. My heart is lit with appreciation for life. Thank you for supporting and being part of my dream through your connection with me and Esencias.

Wishing you the best Christmas with plenty of moments for you.
